Located in Long Island, New York, Hicks Nursery stands as an example that innovation and generational success can go hand in hand. Founded in 1853, the largest plant nursery on Long Island is sixth generation owned and operated. Having grown with the Long Island community for over 170 years, Hicks Nursery has established itself as a staple of Long Island history.
Hicks Nursery success can be attributed to, in part, diversifying their clientele between at-home gardeners and professional horticultural companies. Whether you are a homeowner looking for the perfect flower for your front porch or a professional looking to build a garden paradise for a client, Hicks has established itself to cater to both needs perfectly. Hicks prides itself on being the “…one-stop shop recognized for our vast selection, availability, convenience, and top-notch customer service.”
Equally, a large part of the generational and financial success Hicks Nursery has earned is by focusing on more than customer service and skills. Hicks true skill for its longevity and financial success is based on its commitment to its community and investment in the future. They consistently host garden shows and festivals for the local community to enjoy, especially for families and children. By sharing the wonder and beauty of their botanical field with every generation of local Long Islanders, Hicks Nursery ensures that every generation of these families knows what value and joy gardening can provide.
Strategy
To continue their longstanding history of innovation, Hicks Nursery retained Chute Gerdeman to create a new store layout, design, and overall customer experience and, in turn, commissioned KCI Works to develop display fixtures with a newly developed version of High-Density Polyethylene (a variant of recycled plastic lumber). This new HDPE lumber is the perfect choice for any type of sustainable effort, as this product KCI Works utilized is made from 100% recycled materials (verified independently by GreenCircle).
The completed work created a welcoming atmosphere both inside and outside of the Hicks Nursery storefront and sales floor. These HDPE fixtures provide a perfect mixture of durability for consistent staff use and provide an aesthetic style that contributes to the overall brand image Hicks Nursery has cultivated over its rich history.
Result
KCI Works collaborated with the Chute Gerdeman team to fabricate new fixtures for the inside sales floor and outside entrance. The structures have impressed existing Hicks Nursery staff for this HDPE variant’s strength, waterproofing, and longevity. In addition, these new HDPE fixtures provided a new aesthetic well received by both new and existing customers.
