Established in 1829, the Ohio School for the Deaf is one of the oldest continuously open public deaf schools in the United States. With over 150 deaf or hard of hearing students welcomed to the campus each year, the Ohio School for the Deaf offers students opportunities to learn and grow socially and emotionally in a safe environment.
Their core philosophy proudly shares the ideal that, “only through education can the American heritage, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness be enjoyed by all segments of this and succeeding generations. And that every child, irrespective of individual differences and all other considerations, may as a birthright expect every opportunity for total personality development.”
To maintain this core ideal, the Ohio School for the Deaf has always had an emphasis on student development and personal growth. Their methods have moved past the basic standard of creating good students and have developed their teaching methods to produce good people sound of mind and character.
Strategy
Throughout the Ohio School for the Deaf’s 190+ year history, they have focused on student success and educational development. A key aspect of this is to maintain facilities that reflect the history and dedication of this school – a challenge KCI Works was presented with and met.
The completed product provides a space that allows staff and older students to create meals for themselves and fellow classmates and peers. The multi-colored, solid-surface countertops create a youthful, fun environment firmly set by the stainless-steel appliances and custom fabricated cabinetry. The open design allows for everyone to socialize and clearly see one another to ensure communication is easily done.
Result
KCI Works collaborated with ACI Construction to fabricate a new kitchen area for students. The completed work provided an inviting location for students to enjoy their meals and foster their learning development.
